At a glance
“Tandberg” in satellite listings usually refers to the proprietary Director or RAS security family created by Tandberg Television for professional contribution and distribution—not a catch-all term for encrypted television.

What it is—and is not
Director used smart-card authorization and over-air receiver control. RAS 1/2 protected professional transport streams with fixed or remotely managed control words.
It is not BISS, PowerVu, Irdeto or every feed produced by a Tandberg-branded encoder. The encryption column—not the package or service name—is the deciding evidence.
Latest verified developments
No 2025–2026 announcement specific to a new Tandberg CA product was found. The corporate successor, MediaKind, is investing in IP transport, streaming and cloud workflows while the old satellite CA footprint contracts.
MediaKind agrees to acquire Harmonic’s video business
Reported value: about $145 million, with completion expected in the first half of 2026 subject to approvals and the French works-council process. The rationale centers on SaaS and streaming infrastructure—not a Tandberg CA revival.
LTN + MediaKind integrate IP transport and edge processing
The partnership reflects the shift from managed satellite CA toward software-defined contribution and delivery.
Techex transport joins MK.IO Beam
Techex “tx edge” was integrated with MediaKind’s MK.IO Beam and shown at NAB 2026.
Multiview expands in North America
Charter launched Multiview for the 2026 NCAA basketball tournaments; MediaKind described an MK.IO footprint reaching more than 20 million North American subscribers.
Historic European hotspots show no Tandberg entries
Current LyngSat pages for Eutelsat 21B at 21.5°E and Eutelsat 7C at 7.0°E showed no Tandberg listings. Their historic Tandberg-labeled contribution feeds are no longer present.
How the technology differs
Tandberg Television emerged in Norway in 1979, was acquired by Ericsson in 2007 for about $1.4 billion, lost the Tandberg product brand in January 2010, and became part of MediaKind in 2018. Tandberg ASA—the videoconferencing company acquired by Cisco—is a different corporate branch.
Tandberg Director / RAS
Proprietary professional CA. Director used smart cards and over-air authorization; RAS provided fixed-key and DSNG authorization modes on supported professional IRDs.
Vendor-specificBISS
An EBU-backed interoperable approach. BISS-1 uses a pre-shared session key; BISS-E adds an encrypted session key. Supported by equipment from multiple vendors.
Open specificationPowerVu
A separate proprietary CA lineage from Scientific-Atlanta and Cisco, with managed entitlements and its own compatible receiver ecosystem.
Separate CA familyThree Tandberg-era protection layers
- Director: smart-card CA derived from VideoGuard, with receiver authorization and over-air software control.
- RAS 1 & 2: Remote Authorisation System for professional transport streams; legacy documentation describes fixed-control-word and DSNG group modes.
- Signal Protection: a lighter legacy contribution-scrambling option listed on compatible receiver platforms.
The modern MediaKind MK RX1 lists BISS-CA and BISS-1/E reception plus Cygnus Director management. Current material does not list the old Director V5 smart-card or RAS options for RX1.
Current and legacy SES-6 listings
The two América rows are current, independently cross-checked service records. The eight RCN rows are legacy listing references retained with their older update dates and an explicit fresh-verification warning. “N/A” means the source did not provide a field.

Confirmed absences and false positives
- Eutelsat 21B (21.5°E): no Tandberg entry on the LyngSat page checked 11 October 2026.
- Eutelsat 7C (7.0°E): no Tandberg entry on the LyngSat page checked 11 October 2026.
- BBC SATBACK at 27.5°W: historical evidence identifies BISS-1, not Tandberg; current status was not re-verified.
- “TandbergTV” package names: package metadata alone does not prove encryption. Clear services and a BISS-1 service named “TANDBERG5” were deliberately excluded.
Professional receiver compatibility
Tandberg TT1260 / TT1280 / RX1290
Documented CA options included BISS Mode 1/E, RAS 1, RAS 2, Director V5, Signal Protection, DVB-CI and Provider Lock, depending on model and licensed software option.
- Director smart-card slot and over-air control
- RAS fixed-key and DSNG group modes
- Professional SD/HD contribution workflows
Ericsson RX8200
The successor platform offered Director by Ericsson for single- or multi-service use, Ericsson RAS, Signal Protection, BISS Mode 1/E and DVB Common Interface as licensed options.
- Support is option-dependent
- Commonly traded as used equipment
- Documentation—not front-panel branding—should decide compatibility
MediaKind MK RX1
A multi-codec edge processor supporting HEVC/UHD 4K, MPEG-4 AVC and MPEG-2, with satellite, ASI, SDI and IP options.
- BISS-CA, BISS-1 and BISS-E listed
- Cygnus Director management ecosystem
- No legacy RAS / Director V5 smart-card claim in current material
Model name is not enough
Professional receivers often require the correct input card, modulation profile, codec license and CA option. A receiver that tunes DVB-S2 does not automatically possess Director or RAS authorization.
- Confirm hardware build and license keys
- Match CA to broadcaster-issued authorization
- Validate output and monitoring interfaces
Authorized reception and configuration
Use broadcaster-approved hardware, authorization and network parameters. The tuning values below are not access credentials and do not enable reception of protected content.
Confirm distribution rights
Obtain written authorization, an approved receiver profile and any smart card or entitlement from the feed owner or distribution operator.
Verify RF compatibility
Confirm C-band support, LNB type, local oscillator, polarization convention, satellite beam and dish size for the receive site.
Enter carrier parameters
Configure the verified frequency, L/R polarization, symbol rate, FEC, DVB-S2 and 8PSK values exactly as provided. For 4019 R, confirm whether the workflow requires T2-MI PLP 0 or PLP 1.
Map the intended service
Use SID, video PID and audio PID only when the platform requires manual selection. Avoid assuming an older PID map is still current.
Complete CA authorization
Insert the issued card or apply the broadcaster-provided Director/RAS entitlement using the authorized operations procedure. Do not substitute keys from third-party forums.
Validate and record
Check lock, MER/C/N, continuity errors, decoder output and entitlement status; record the source URL, listing date and site verification time.
Common technical troubleshooting
RF lock but no video
Confirm that the receiver is authorized for the service, the selected SID is correct, the codec license is installed and the output format is supported. RF lock alone does not prove entitlement.
No carrier lock
Recheck C-band LNB local-oscillator settings, circular polarization, 40.5°W pointing, symbol rate, FEC and 8PSK capability. Use a spectrum analyzer or receiver constellation view where available.
T2-MI service is missing
The 4019 R RCN carrier is listed with T2-MI PLPs. Confirm that the receiver can decapsulate T2-MI and that the correct PLP is selected; many consumer receivers cannot.
“Tandberg” appears but CA does not
Check which column contains the word. A package, encoder or service name is not the encryption system. The CA descriptor must identify Tandberg or Director.
Audio language is unexpected
Select the documented audio PID or language track. América’s SID 3 listing includes separate Spanish and Qaa-labeled audio entries.
Old parameters stopped working
Listings can lag operational changes. Ask the feed owner for current parameters and compare them with the most recent source update before changing hardware.
Frequently asked questions
Is every encrypted satellite feed a Tandberg feed?
No. BISS, PowerVu, Irdeto, Viaccess and other systems are distinct. The package or encoder name does not determine the CA system.
Is Tandberg Television now Cisco?
No. Ericsson acquired Tandberg Television in 2007; its lineage later became MediaKind. Cisco acquired a different Tandberg company focused on videoconferencing.
What is Tandberg Director?
A legacy professional conditional-access system with smart-card authorization, receiver control and over-air software capabilities. Current listings often shorten the CA label to “Director.”
Can a consumer receiver open Director services?
Not merely because it can tune DVB-S2. Reception requires compatible professional hardware, the correct licensed CA option and authorization from the content owner.
Are the SES-6 RCN rows confirmed live?
They remain on the LyngSat page checked 11 October 2026, but their row-update dates are November 2022 and October 2024. No independent KingOfSat cross-check was obtained, so they are marked for fresh verification.
Does the MK RX1 support old Tandberg RAS?
The current RX1 material reviewed lists BISS-CA, BISS-1/E and Cygnus Director. It does not list the old RAS or Director V5 smart-card options.
Where are decryption keys?
This guide intentionally contains none. Protected professional feeds should be accessed only with broadcaster-issued authorization and supported equipment.
Sources and verification notes
