π‘ What Is BISS?
BISS (Basic Interoperable Scrambling System) is a professional scrambling standard used mainly for satellite and IP contribution, distribution and broadcast applications. It was developed within the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) ecosystem and is widely associated with sports contribution feeds, broadcaster distribution, news networks and temporary professional transmissions.
The modern BISS family includes BISS1, BISS2 and BISS-CA. According to the EBU, BISS2 replaced the older DES/DVB-CSA approach with AES-128 for session-word encryption and DVB-CISSA for stream scrambling. BISS-CA adds conditional-access functionality, including the ability to authorize or revoke individual receivers in real time.

The EBU describes BISS-CA as an interoperable conditional-access mode capable of allowing or revoking reception for specific receivers in real time. It is particularly suited to sports and other rights-controlled live content.
π Latest Publicly Documented BISS Changes
The most important correction to earlier versions of this article is that a satellite database's “updated” date should not automatically be described as the date on which encryption changed. The tables below therefore use wording such as database record/update unless a genuine encryption change is independently documented.
- 1 September 2026: KingOfSat currently lists ENTV HD on Badr 8 at 26.0°E, 12523 V, 30000, FEC 2/3 as BISS. This is the latest dated record I could verify for this particular service—not 13 September.
- 26 August 2026: LyngSat's TeleAmazonas record confirms two Intelsat 21 services started on 14 April 2026: a BISS-1 SD service and a BISS-2 HD service.
- 2026: Public satellite databases continue to document BISS services across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and international contribution networks.

⚠️ Unverified BISS Data
Satellite databases frequently contain unnamed services, test carriers and temporary feeds. A service should not be given a guessed channel name merely because its SID appears close to another broadcaster.
For example, an unnamed Turkish service should remain labelled Unverified until an independent source identifies the broadcaster. The same rule applies to temporary sports feeds, test carriers and contribution services.
Never replace missing frequency, symbol-rate or FEC information with an estimated value. If a current parameter cannot be confirmed, the correct editorial label is: [Placeholder — verify latest value before publishing]
π How to Verify a BISS Transponder
- Identify the satellite and orbital position.
- Check the frequency and polarization against a current satellite database.
- Confirm the symbol rate and FEC.
- Check whether the database identifies the service as Clear, BISS1, BISS2 or another encryption system.
- Perform a fresh blind scan or manual scan on your receiver where appropriate.
- Do not assume that an old BISS record means the service is still encrypted today.
- For encrypted services, use only authorized access supplied by the broadcaster or rights holder.
π Important Difference: BISS Listing vs. BISS Key
A satellite database can publicly document that a service is using BISS without publishing or validating its current session credentials. Therefore, the presence of a channel in a BISS database should not be interpreted as confirmation that an authorization key is publicly available.
